En enero 15 de este año la familia Novoa Espitaleta recibió una fatal noticia, su pequeña hija Mariana de dos años y medio murió ahogada en la piscina de su jardín infantil en extrañas circunstancias.
La pequeña pasó la puerta que conducía a la zona húmeda y en un descuido de quienes la cuidaban se fue a jugar con unas pelotas que estaban sobre algo que parecía un tapete, pero que realmente era el paño que cubría la piscina llena de agua.
Un día después de los hechos los padres de Mariana pidieron que se hiciera justicia y la Secretaría de Integración Social respondió haciendo una visita al Jardín y emitiendo un concepto desfavorable porque el lugar no cumplía con muchos requisitos de seguridad.
Aunque no se sabe finalmente cómo se produjo el ahogamiento, ni por qué fue causado, el proceso de la responsabilidad de la muerte de la niña está siendo llevado por la Fiscalia y ya fueron vinculadas dos profesoras, pero en la investigación no se ha llamado a la directora del jardín.

El 4 de julio la profesora Karen Julieta Amézquita y su abogado presentaron un preacuerdo pactado con la Fiscalía en el cual ella aceptó haber cometido el delito de homicidio culposo y a cambio recibirá la mitad de la pena, es decir 16 meses de una sanción judicial que determinará la juez del caso. La maestra no irá a la cárcel porque el delito es excarcelable. Por su parte la otra profesora no aceptó el delito e irá a un juicio oral ante otro juez.
Después de tanto dolor y para evitar este tipo de accidentes Hortensia, la madre de Mariana creó una fundación que tiene como objetivo conseguir recursos para capacitar gratuitamente a los funcionarios de los jardines más pobres.
"La idea es saber qué hacer en casos de atoramiento con comida o con algún juguete, cómo manejar el ahogamiento, la caída por las escaleras, los golpes fuertes, en fin, todo lo que se puede generar en un jardín infantil", manifestó.
Los talleres serán dictados por una pediatra especializada en urgencias médicas y la idea es empezar por localidades necesitadas como Ciudad Bolívar, Bosa y Usme.
